Installation cost

Aboveground residential install (500-gallon tank): $300–$1,500. Underground install: $1,500–$3,500 with excavation, sand bedding and cathodic protection. Permits and inspection: $50–$400 on top. For leased tanks, the install is typically free as part of the dealer relationship. See tank installation cost.

NFPA 58 distance rules

Tank setbacks from buildings and property lines vary by tank size: 10 ft for 125–500 gallon tanks; 25 ft for 501–2,000 gallon. Fill valves and vents: 10 ft from any building opening or ignition source. Local jurisdictions sometimes impose stricter rules. See distance rules.

Permits and inspection

Required in nearly every US jurisdiction. Issued by the state fire marshal, state LP gas board, or local building department depending on the state. Your installer typically handles permitting on your behalf. See propane tank permits.

The installation process

From site survey to first fill, a typical aboveground residential installation takes 1–3 days. Underground installation: 3–7 days including excavation, set, backfill and inspection. See tank installation process.
