Daily wholesale price — Mont Belvieu spot

The Mont Belvieu, Texas wholesale propane spot price is the closest thing to a daily US propane price. It trades continuously on commodity markets and is the underlying benchmark for all retail pricing. The EIA daily spot price table publishes Mont Belvieu prices in cents per gallon, refreshed daily.

The retail price you pay sits roughly $1.50–$2.00 per gallon above the Mont Belvieu spot, covering transport, terminal, storage, delivery, service and margin. So a $1.00/gal wholesale price implies $2.50–$3.00/gal retail in most markets.

Weekly residential retail price — EIA WHOPS

The EIA Weekly Heating Oil and Propane Survey publishes residential retail averages every Monday from October through March. National, PADD-region and select-state breakdowns are available. This is the authoritative US residential retail price reference — but only for the heating season.

Off-season — no weekly residential survey

From April through September, EIA does not publish weekly residential propane prices. The wholesale Mont Belvieu series continues, and is the most useful proxy for tracking direction during the off-season.

Your dealer's quote vs published prices

What you actually pay depends on your tank size, fill volume, contract type and route density — not just the regional average. A high-volume customer with a customer-owned tank on auto-fill may pay below the regional average; a light user with a leased tank and will-call delivery often pays well above it. FAQ

Where can I see today's propane price?

For US wholesale: EIA daily Mont Belvieu spot. For residential retail (Oct–Mar): EIA WHOPS weekly. There is no daily residential price publication.

Why is my dealer's quote different from the EIA price?

The EIA figure is a regional or national mean. Your quote reflects your specific tank size, fill volume, contract type and route — and the dealer's local cost structure. Differences of $0.30–$1.00 per gallon in either direction are common.
