Current propane prices per gallon
With the United States Energy Information Administration resuming its weekly heating oil and propane update in October 2013, it is easier to establish trends and have benchmarks for current propane prices. Remember that the propane price per gallon you are charged by your propane company might be different so get accurate quotes before signing a propane supply agreement. Still, this is a good indication as to the variations you can expect in current propane prices from propane companies.
Current propane prices per gallon are higher than they were last year
According to the US EIA, the average national current propane price is $2.76 per gallon (23 December 2013). Since the beginning of the 2013-2014 winter season, they have increased almost 17%. Furthermore, this does not compare well compared to last years’ propane price per gallon of $2.24 for the same period. Therefore, we can expect propane companies to charge proportionately higher propane prices per gallon over the 2013-2014 winter season than they did last year. However, current propane prices per gallon remain lower than they were at the start of the 2011-2012 winter season, which is reassuring.
Current propane prices per gallon compared to the beginning of the 2013-2014 winter season
Since the beginning of the current winter season, overall current propane prices have increased by almost 17% or $0.40 per gallon.
- The greatest total increase in propane prices per gallon is currently in Indiana, where propane prices have gone up by 0.70 per gallon.
- The greatest relative increase in propane prices per gallon is currently in North Dakota, where propane prices have increased by 40,5%.
- The smallest total increase in propane prices per gallon is currently in North Carolina, where propane prices have increased $0.20 per gallon.
- The smallest relative increase in propane prices per gallon is currently in North Carlina, where propane prices have increased 6.7%.

- This week, current propane prices are highest in Rhode Island ($1,169 to fill a propane tank), lowest in Nebraska ($562 to fill a propane tank).

US EIA data does not cover all states but here are some rough trends on current propane prices per gallon compared to the same period last year:
- On the whole, US current propane prices per gallon are 18.76% more expensive than they were last year.
- Most expensive current propane price: Rhode Island has the most expensive propane price at an average of $3.898 per gallon.
- Highest variation between current and former propane prices: North Dakota’s current propane price is 48.91% more expensive now than it was over the same period in 2012.
- Cheapest current propane price: Nebraska currently has the lowest average propane price at an average of $1.876 per gallon.
- Lowest variation between current and former propane prices: in New Hampshire, the current propane price is 4.86% lower than it was over the same period in 2012.

Imagine your propane price per gallon was on par with state averages established by the US EIA:
- Well, if your home is in Nebraska, filling a 500-gallon propane tank (300 gallons if you are at 20% capacity and fill it to 80%) will cost you $562 at current average propane prices per gallon, compared to $397 last year. That is $165 more expensive.
- Ohio is more representative of national trends and the same amount of propane will cost you $842 at current propane prices, while you would have paid $673 last year, so over $168 difference.
